Historic Buildings Yi-Lan Hua-Long First Village Survey, Research, and Restoration and Reuse Project

Design concept

Hualong Village was originally a military training ground during the Qing Dynasty and was later converted into a military hospital called “Weiwu Hospital” during World War II, serving as dormitories for medical staff.

After the Nationalist government relocated to Taiwan following their defeat in the Chinese Civil War, the Japanese wooden houses were taken over and used as military officer housing for the United Logistics Battery Factory. Additional dormitories were constructed over time, resulting in the current state of the village. It holds historical and cultural value, with three remaining Japanese-style dormitories and five modern dormitories.

The future plan for the village includes the establishment of an organic agriculture market, a multi-functional arts and cultural space, a creative market, or nearby spaces for community activities. It will be repurposed as a venue for showcasing and preserving Yilan’s traditional crafts, developing children’s art and family activities, as well as promoting the history of the old city (including the old city, military camp, military dependents’ villages, etc.) and educational outreach.
