The restoration and reuse project for the municipally designated historic site “ZiTengLu.”

Design concept

The “ZiTengLu” is located at No. 16 Lane 1, Section 3, Xinsheng South Road, Da’an District, Taipei City. It is an elegant brick and wood mixed-style building situated in a concentrated area of Japanese-style residences. Originally built in the mid-Japanese colonial period, it served as the residence of a mid-level official named Shallow Kagawa. The property features a unique entrance and courtyard and is located in close proximity to school districts, offering a serene and refined environment. After the departure of the Japanese following World War II, the Ministry of Finance took over the property, which was later transformed into a tea house by the descendants of the original residents.

Due to its artistic atmosphere, the entire historic house attracted many artists, cultural figures, and individuals concerned with current affairs who frequently gathered there. The “ZiTengLu” became synonymous with the ideals of liberalism and served as a space for social and political reform movements. To emphasize its cultural value, efforts were made by members of the arts and cultural community, as well as concerned parties, to prevent its demolition. Consequently, the Taipei City Government designated it as a municipally recognized historic site, ensuring its preservation.
