The Technical Services Project for the Supervision and Work Records of the Restoration Project of the Important Settlement Architectural Complex, Wang’an Huazhai Ancient House
Design concept
The Wang’an Huazhai settlement was selected in 2003 as one of the World’s Top 100 Cultural Monuments worthy of care and preservation. In accordance with the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, the Penghu County Government approved the inclusion of Wang’an Huazhai as a designated settlement in 2007, making it one of the important cultural assets of Penghu County. The Huazhai settlement, located in the center of Wang’an Township, was formerly known as Zhongshe Village. The architectural features of the area include walls and vegetable houses constructed with piled-up coral stones, as well as Min-style old houses with red-tiled roofs. The irregular shape of the coral stones makes them difficult to stack, but the local craftsmen have skillfully built sturdy and durable walls with these stones. These stone walls provide insulation, keeping the houses warm in winter and cool in summer, and they also offer excellent heat insulation, creating the unique architectural characteristics of Penghu.
